2010 TAMPA BAY RAYS MINORS
1) Wade Davis - RHP - TB - Grade B+: 10-8, 3.40 with a 140/60 K/BB in 159 innings for Triple-A Durham, 139 hits. He still has some command issues but I like him. CALLED UP
2) Jeremy Hellickson - RHP - TB - Grade B+: 2.61 ERA with 123/29 K/BB in 107 innings, 69 hits combined between Double-A Montgomery and Durham. All stats are excellent and did not deteriorate as he moved up despite complaints about lack of plus velocity. Has struck out 32 hitters in his last three starts, with five walks..
3) Tim Beckham - SS - TB - Grade B+: Hitting .281/.335/.400 for Class A Bowling Green. Needs more polish but ceiling remains immense.
4) Jason Castro - C - HOU - Grade B+: I really like his defense, and his bat should at least be decent. He's kind of a low-end B+, with a high floor but a lower ceiling compared to some other guys in this grade range. CALLED UP
5) Jose Tabata - OF - PIT - Grade B: I don't know if I agree with the Pirates about his power, but I do believe them about his age and at 21 he is still VERY young with high upside. CALLED UP
6) Desmond Jennings - OF - TB - Grade B: Hitting .322/.406/.496 with 52 steals in 57 attempts, 66 walks, 66 strikeouts in 484 at-bats combined between Montgomery and Durham. Breakthrough season after shoulder problems in '08. CALLED UP
7) Nick Barnese - RHP - TB - Grade B-: 2.53 ERA with 62/25 K/BB in 75 innings for Bowling Green, 56 hits. Very solid pitching.
8) Jake Jefferies - C - TB - Grade B-: Hitting .270/.332/.371 for Bowling Green. Makes contact, but lack of power looks like a problem.
9) Matt Moore - LHP - TB - Grade B-: 3.15 ERA with 176/70 K/BB in 123 innings for Bowling Green, 86 hits. Love the K/IP and hit rate, needs to lower walks.
10) Josh Donaldson - C - OAK - Grade B-: Great plate discipline, nails baserunners, still polishing other defensive aspects and power remains largely untapped.
11) Peter Bourjos - OF - LAA - Grade B-: Borderline B. Speed goes nicely with improved plate discipline
12) Michael Burgess - OF - WAS - Grade B-: borderline C+. Power potential, throwing arm, and youth are big positives, will take a walk, but strikes out a lot and batting average is quite low.
13) Carlos Rosa - RHP - KC - Grade B-: His numbers at Omaha are better than they look, and he has the arm strength to be a solid reliever.
14) Reid Brignac - SS - TB - Grade C+: .282/.327/.417 for Durham, .254/.277/.365 in 22 major league games. Still finding his way. CALLED UP
15) John Jaso - C - TB - Grade C+: .257/.356/.350 for Durham. Good contact hitter but lacks power.
16) Jacob McGree - LHP - TB - Grade C+: 7.45 ERA with 22/9 K/BB in 19 innings for Class A Charlotte, 24 hits. Rehabbing from Tommy John and it shows.
17) Eduardo Morlan - RHP - TB - Grade C+: 3.84 ERA with 60/29 K/BB in 68 innings for Montgomery, 66 hits. OK but not terrific performance.
18) Fernando Perez - OF - TB - Grade C+: Injured most of the season with a bad wrist. Hitting .278/.395/.361 in 13 games for Durham, with eight steals in nine attempts.
19) Mitch Talbot - RHP - CLE - Grade C+: Currently on rehab in the Gulf Coast League after vaguely described "arm problems.". Posted 4.47 ERA with 40/18 K/BB in 54 innings for Durham earlier in the year. CALLED UP
20) Heath Rollins - RHP - TB - Grade C+: 3.83 ERA with 83/33 K/BB in 134 innings for Montgomery, 147 hits. Hittable control type, but I think he has sleeper potential.
21) Reid Fronk - OF - TB - Grade C+: .201/.321/.286 in 112 games for Charlotte. Power totally vanished.
22) Kyle Lobstein - LHP - TB - Grade C+: 2.81 ERA with 65/22 K/BB in 67 innings for Hudson Valley in the New York-Penn League, 51 hits. Impressive performance, breakthrough guy for 2010.
23) Emeel Salem - OF - TB - Grade C+: .251/.324/.327 with 24 steals in 32 attempts for Charlotte. Lacks power, but makes contact and has speed.
24) Albert Suarez - RHP - TB - Grade C+: Made just two starts in the NY-P.
25) Connor Hoehn - RHP - OAK - Grade C+: Unhittable as a closer in the Northwest League, could move fast in that role but more slowly if he starts.
26) Justin Maxwell - OF - WAS - Grade C+: What you see is what you get: power, walks, speed, low batting average. Can they look past that and appreciate his secondary skills?
27) Louis Coleman - RHP - KC - Grade C+: LSU product looks like a really sharp reliever to me; could rise very quickly.
28) Cole White - RHP - KC - Grade C+: Sleeper relief arm from 2009 draft, could advance rapidly along with Coleman.
29) Tim Smith - OF - KC - Grade C+: Scouts don't like his tools and he's not a huge power guy, but he seems to hit .300 everywhere he goes.
30) C.J. Retherford - 2B - CHW - Grade C+: He can hit despite unimpressive tools. Not sure how he fits into long-term plans.
31) Jhonny Nunez - RHP - CHW - Grade C+: Power relief arm could help sometime soon.
32) John Shelby - OF - CHW - Grade C: Good speed, good glove, some power, on-base skills still sketchy despite increase in walk rate.
33) Brian Bogusevic - OF - HOU - Grade C: Gets some slack due to his background, I can still see him as a useful fourth outfielder.
34) Mark Hamilton - 1B - STL - Grade C: Remember him? Looked like an injury-plagued bust but rebounded this year, got a place on the 40-man. Don't see how he fits in the lineup other than as trade bait.
35) Pete Kozma - SS - STL - Grade C: If he'd gone to Wichita State, this would be his junior season. Too young to write off just yet.
36) J.R. Higley - OF - WAS - Grade C: High-ceiling tools hound, didn't light up the NY-P but still has potential.
37) Washington, LeVon - 2B - TB
38) Diekroeger, Kenneth - SS - TB
39) Glaesmann, Todd - CF - TB
Comments: Glaesmann is an extremely athletic high school outfielder who is a two-sport standout. A football injury (ankle) slowed him early, but he was back to full strength by April. He certainly looks the part and uses his athleticism to his advantage on the field, particularly with his better than average speed. His setup and approach at the plate needs some serious tinkering, but the team that thinks they can fix that might take a shot.
Enhanced Scouting Report
40) Bailey, Lucas - C - TB
Comments: Bailey was thought of as one of the better high school catchers in a Draft class that has some depth in that area, but Tommy John surgery on his right elbow put his future somewhat in doubt. When healthy, he's a solid, not spectacular, catch-and-throw guy. At the plate, he's got good bat speed and plus power potential. He could head to Auburn and rehab there, but a team could decide to take a chance on him, knowing the success of the surgery these days, and work to get him back in form within its system.
